When your home has icicles hanging off it after a winter snowstorm, this is not a good sign! This Milwaukie, OR homeowner found our company online and called us to have one of our Energy Consultants evaluate their home to determine how to make it warmer and make them more comfortable.

Knowing that the home had icicles usually means that there is ice damming. This is when a ridge of ice forms at the edge of a roof when it is not insulated correctly. Water can back up behind that dam and cause damage to the roof, walls, ceilings, and/or insulation.

This homeowner chose to have the attic insulated to help with both the icicles issue and to make their home more comfortable.

First off, the Josh Lowe’s Dr. Energy Saver crew removed the attic insulation. It was old fiberglass that: a) isn’t the best for attic insulation, b) wasn’t covering all areas (see photo) so really wasn’t doing much good, and c) Is a great place for rodent to nest. Our Energy Consultant saw there was rodent activity in this attic.

They then could see where they needed to air seal. If the crew didn’t remove the old insulation, it just makes a bottom layer where the critters can still live, plus the air sealing can’t happen. A lot of the heat loss from the home to the attic was happening through the air leak areas.

Then, there was the can lights! We are amazed at how many homes have lights that allow so much air leakage in to the attic. The easy and very efficient solution is can light covers plus then air sealing these down to the roof deck.

Now their attic was ready for insulation. The crew blew in TruSoft ™ cellulose to the higher R-60 level. The homeowners were very happy with our work and attention to detail!
