5 Tips to Keep Your Family Safe with Garage Doors

A typical garage door is opened and closed ten times a day. It is usually the main entrance into a home and can be a safety hazard if not used properly. 30,000 injuries are reported from garage doors each year, some resulting in death. Make sure you are using a professional for maintenance and installation! Here are a few tips to help keep your family safe:

  1. It probably seems silly to have to say but keep the remote away from young children who might injure themselves if the garage door malfunctions.
  2. Don’t place your fingers in between the door panels because you could pinch your fingers.
  3. Going on vacation this summer? Make sure to unplug your garage door opener; this makes your door unusable or go to the wall unit and switch wall unit to vacation mode.
  4. Don’t leave the garage door partially open. This could potentially attract thieves and could accidentally move down and harm small children or pets.
  5. Carefully check over all the parts looking for wear and tear, especially springs, cables, pulleys, and rollers. Don’t attempt to fix these yourself because they are under high tension and require special tools for adjustment.

Treat your garage door opener like you would a house key. Keep it with you. Don’t hand it to a valet or leave it in your car.
