Attic Insulation Installation Near Portland, Vancouver, Salem, Eugene, and Roseburg
Upgrading attic insulation is a popular and cost-effective way to make your home more energy-efficient. After all, more energy (and money!) is lost through the attic than through any other part of the house.
That is true in Western Oregon and Southwest Washington as well as around the world. What makes matters worse is improperly or poorly installing inadequate attic insulation. Existing attic insulation in many homes may be as minimal as R-19 — which pales in comparison to the recommended R-value!
Enduring a cold winter with so little insulation would be like wearing a T-shirt in a snowstorm. In those situations, your home needs the equivalent of a down-filled parka. As Western Oregon and Southwest Washington’s experts on attic insulation, we know what your home needs and we deliver!
The U.S. Department of Energy recommends between R-49 and R-60 of attic insulation for homes in Eugene, Portland, Salem, and other areas. This is a thick enough blanket of insulation that will boost your R-value and lower your utility bills.

Affordable upgrade. Cellulose insulation is often used in attics because it can be installed quickly and effectively with blowing equipment. Cellulose is super-green: It’s made from recycled newspapers and treated for resistance to fire, mold and insects.

Importance of Air Sealing & Attic Insulation in Western Oregon

In addition to keeping you warm in the winter, insulation is also needed during the summer because it prevents heat transfer. Insulation stops your attic’s scorching heat from being transferred into the living areas of your home. Air sealing also prevents the loss of conditioned air that will limit your home’s energy-efficiency. That is why air sealing is a critical step when insulating an attic.
Josh Lowe’s Dr. Energy Saver uses a wide variety of materials and techniques to stop energy-wasting air leaks. Installing baffles ensures proper attic ventilation and helps avoid damage from ice damming and excess moisture.

Frequently Asked Insulation Questions
- Can I put new insulation on top of old?
- You can, but you should not, if your goal is to have a more comfortable home to live in! In the past, fiberglass was used; rodents, bats, and birds urinate and nest in fiberglass and make a mess. Also, in the past and even now, homes were not air-sealed (those attic floor gaps where air leaks up from inside your living space). So to add new insulation on top of old means: 1) You still have the old insulation as an area for critters, and now they have a warm blanket on top, and 2) If you do not remove the old insulation, it is practically impossible for our crew to get to the gaps, so they cannot air-seal effectively.
- Is adding insulation to attic worth it?
- It should be your top priority when determining how to make your home more comfortable to live in! Air flows from under your home through to the attic and then to the outside. If you properly air seal and insulate your attic, less air is getting moved through. That means you pay less to heat or cool the air inside your home.
- Is it better to insulate attic ceiling or floor?
- It depends! Some situations have such a complex attic, especially in larger homes, that it can make more sense and cost less to insulate the attic ceiling with closed-cell spray foam. Having one of our experts do an evaluation and show you what they found is your best starting place to be able to make the best decision.
- What is the best R value for attic insulation?
- In Oregon, the Residential Specialty code states at least R-38. It is moving to R-49, and Energy Star standards recommend R-60.
- What is the best type of insulation for an attic?
- Each home is unique, so you do want to have an expert evaluate your attic to see what will work best. The top materials are blown-in cellulose and closed-cell spray foam.
