These homeowners met us at a home show and scheduled an appointment to have their rental home evaluated. The renters had told them it was expensive to heat/cool this home.
Our energy consultant evaluated both the crawl space and the attic. Both had major issues with torn, ripped, and/or missing insulation. Plus, the insulation in both spaces was fiberglass (See BEFORE picture that shows the attic), and besides not being a very good insulator, critters LOVE to make their homes in it!
They chose to start with the attic project. The first step for our insulation crew was to remove all the old, inefficient insulation. What this allows us to do (that many other insulation contractors skip) is to seal up all the spaces where air leaks out of the conditioned space below where you live. That’s the air you pay to heat or cool! This particular attic had a LOT of leaky spots.
Our crew then blew in the TruSoft™ blown-in cellulose insulation. With the borate treatment it receives (not all cellulose insulations have this), animals do not like to nest in it.
The attic insulation, coupled with the air sealing, has made a tremendous difference in the comfort, and energy cost savings, for the renters of this home.
