Case Study: Full Insulation Process in Attic and Crawl Space – Vancouver, WA

Closed-cell spray foam insulation in crawl space

Home Evaluation

One of our customers recently had his crawl space insulation removed and needed a reliable solution that would ensure a powerful resistance to heat flow, and be cost-effective in reducing energy consumption and energy bills. He had originally requested that he would like new insulation installed in his crawl space and blown into the attic.

Our Certified Energy Consultant Sean Becker conducted a home evaluation and discovered many problems in the attic and crawl space that were leading to inefficient energy costs.

What was discovered:

  • Old and dirty insulation in his 770-square-foot attic space
  • Energy loss generated through the duct system
  • Significant loss of hot and cold air out of the attic and crawl space
  • Lack of heat retention from existing insulation

Solution

Our company does not install fiberglass batt insulation, which is a solution that is most commonly installed by insulation contractors, largely since it is the cheapest insulation to buy, and something we believe is a very poor insulation for stopping heat or cold air flow from your house.

Our energy-efficient solution for this customer included:

  • Insulate crawl space with closed-cell spray foam with an average thickness of two inches
  • Install new vapor barrier, preventing and controlling moisture from penetrating inside
  • Encapsulate ductwork with closed-cell spray foam insulation, reducing air leaks and energy loss through the ducts
  • Remove existing attic insulation and install TruSoft™ Cellulose Insulation
  • Air sealing attic using ZypFoam™, preventing air from leaking out of hidden cracks and gaps

Result

Following the completion of our project, this customer now enjoys large savings in his monthly energy costs due to his HVAC system no longer having to work as hard to generate heat. Additionally, the customer will experience better indoor air quality, a lower probability of structural damage, and controlled allergens, pollutants, and pests inside the living space.

Thanks to this customer trusting us with his home, he can comfortably live in his energy-efficient house and reap the benefits of our solution.
